Mykonos, Greece: A Complete Travel Guide
There’s something about Mykonos that feels almost too beautiful to be real. From the winding whitewashed streets and blue-domed churches to the sparkling Aegean Sea, every corner feels like it was made to be photographed. But beyond its picture-perfect views, Mykonos has a charm all its own — slow mornings by the water, long lunches overlooking the sea, sunsets that seem to last forever, and evenings spent wandering through the maze-like streets of Little Venice.
Our time in Mykonos was filled with all of the things I had imagined a Greek island getaway would be and then some. Whether you’re visiting for the beaches, the famous sunsets, the food, or simply to get lost in the beauty of the island, Mykonos is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. Here’s everything we did, where we stayed, and everything you need to know to plan your own trip to Mykonos.
BASIC INFO
Currency: Euros
Language: The primary language spoken in Mykonos, as in the rest of Greece, is Greek. English is widely understood in tourist areas, and many locals working in the tourism industry are proficient in English. You will generally find it easy to communicate in English while exploring the popular tourist destinations on the island.
Safety: Mykonos felt very safe during our visit. Like anywhere you travel, you should still keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Overall, I felt very comfortable walking around the island and exploring on my own.
Weather: We visited Mykonos in May, and the weather was mild, with temperatures generally around 50–70 degrees. The wind made it feel a little cooler than the temperature suggested, especially in the evenings. It wasn’t quite warm enough for swimming or spending the day lying on the beach, but it was perfect weather for exploring, walking around town, and sitting outside at restaurants.
GETTING AROUND
Depending on where you're coming from, you can reach Mykonos by plane or ferry. If you're coming from Athens, the flight is about 40 minutes, while the ferry takes longer depending on the type of ferry and route.
One thing I quickly learned is that taxis can be difficult to find, especially during the busy summer months. Mykonos has a very limited number of licensed taxis, so I highly recommend pre-booking an airport or hotel transfer if you want a stress-free arrival. I booked transportation through our hotel, and honestly, walking out of arrivals to see our driver holding a sign with our name on it made me feel like a VIP!
Walking
Many areas, especially in the main town of Chora, are pedestrian-friendly. Strolling through narrow streets and exploring on foot is a delightful way to experience the local atmosphere.
Public Transportation
Taking the bus is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get around Mykonos, especially if you are staying in Mykonos Town and want to visit some of the island’s beaches. Tickets can be purchased online through the official Mykonos Bus website, which is especially helpful if you want to plan your route ahead of time. I recommend checking the website before heading out since bus schedules can change depending on the season.
When we visited, we found the bus to be a really convenient way to get around without having to rent a car. Most of the popular beaches and areas around the island have routes from either Fabrika or the Old Port, so you will likely find yourself using one of these two bus stations often.

Taxis
Taxis are available on the island and can take you to various destinations. Keep in mind that during peak tourist seasons, it might be a good idea to book in advance.
Rental Vehicles
Renting a scooter, ATV, or car is a popular option, offering flexibility and the ability to explore more remote areas. Ensure that you have the necessary license and insurance.
Boats
Especially during the summer, water taxis and boat services can transport you to nearby beaches and islands.
Where to Stay in Mykonos
There are so many beautiful places to stay in Mykonos, from boutique hotels tucked into the streets of Mykonos Town to luxurious resorts and private villas with incredible views. Where you stay really depends on what kind of trip you're looking for. If you want to walk to restaurants, shopping, Little Venice, and nightlife, I would stay in or very close to Mykonos Town. If you're looking for a more relaxing luxury getaway, I'd look at the resorts and villas outside of town.
Fresh Boutique Hotel-Best for Staying in Mykonos Town
Where we stayed! We loved being right in the heart of Mykonos Town, within walking distance of restaurants, bars, shopping, Little Venice, and the windmills. The hotel has a cute boutique feel and is a great option if you want to spend most of your time exploring and don't want to worry about transportation.

Cavo Tagoo — Best for a Luxury Mykonos Experience
If you've seen those iconic Mykonos infinity-pool photos, you've probably seen Cavo Tagoo. This is the hotel to choose if you want the full luxury experience, incredible Aegean views, and that classic Mykonos aesthetic.

The TownHouse Mykonos — Best for Nightlife & Location
Located right in Mykonos Town, The TownHouse puts you in the middle of the action. It's a great choice if you want to walk to restaurants, bars, shopping, and nightlife without needing a car or taxi every night. The hotel is an adults-only luxury boutique property housed in a restored historic building.

Bill & Coo — Best for Couples
Bill & Coo is a beautiful luxury boutique hotel with an intimate atmosphere and gorgeous Aegean views. I'd especially consider this for a honeymoon, anniversary, or romantic getaway. The property also has private villas if you're looking for something with more space and privacy.

Santa Marina — Best Luxury Beach Resort
If your ideal Mykonos trip involves spending your days at the beach and relaxing at your hotel, Santa Marina is a great choice. It's located on Ornos Bay and gives you more of that resort-style experience, with a beautiful beachfront setting and multiple dining options.

Hotel Matina — Best Budget-Friendly Option
If you want to stay in Mykonos Town without paying luxury-hotel prices, Hotel Matina is worth looking into. It's right in the center but has a peaceful garden courtyard, making it a nice option if you want convenience without the resort price tag.

Mykonos No5 Suites & Villas — Best for Villas
For more space and privacy, Mykonos No5 is a great villa-style option. It's set on a hillside with beautiful Aegean views and offers suites and villas, including options with private pools. This would be especially nice for a group trip or anyone who wants a quieter stay away from the busy streets of Mykonos Town.

My Tip
If this is your first time in Mykonos and you want to explore, I'd recommend staying in or very close to Mykonos Town. You'll be able to walk to so many restaurants, bars, shops, Little Venice, and the windmills, which is exactly what we loved about staying at Fresh Boutique Hotel.If you're more interested in relaxing at your hotel, spending your days at the beach, and having a more luxurious resort experience, look at the hotels and villas outside of town.
THINGS TO DO
WALK AROUND MYKONOS TOWN
Walking around Mykonos Town (Chora) is a delightful experience. The charming narrow streets, adorned with white-washed buildings and vibrant bougainvillea, create a picturesque setting. As you wander through the labyrinthine alleys, you'll discover quaint shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. It is exactly how I imagined Greece in my head. Every corner really is magical especially Matogianni Street.
LITTLE VENICE
Little Venice is one of the most photographed and recognizable spots in Mykonos. Located right along the water, the area is lined with colorful buildings and little balconies that sit directly over the Aegean Sea. The narrow streets, charming restaurants, and seaside cafes make it the perfect place to wander around and take in the views. It’s especially beautiful around sunset, when the waterfront comes alive and you can watch the sun dip below the sea. Little Venice is definitely a spot you won’t want to miss while exploring Mykonos.
Panagia Paraportiani
Address: Χώρα, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Panagia Paraportiani is an iconic church located in the neighborhood of Kastro in Mykonos Town. The name "Paraportiani" means "standing next to the entrance gate" which reflects its location next to the entrance of the medieval castle in the old town. The church is a fine example of Cycladic architecture, characterized by its simple, white-washed walls and smooth curves. The construction of Panagia Paraportiani started in the 15th century and continued for several centuries.
Mykonos Windmills

The iconic windmills of Mykonos stand as a symbol of the island's charm and unique character. Perched on a hill overlooking the town of Chora, these historic windmills date back to the 16th century and once served as a crucial element in the island's wheat production. Today, their charming white structures with wooden blades have become one of the island's most-visited landmarks. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the town from this vantage point, especially during the sunset, creating a postcard-perfect scene. The windmills embody the timeless beauty and cultural heritage that define Mykonos as a sought-after destination in the Greek islands.
Luxury Catamaran
One of my favorite things we did in Mykonos was spend the day on a luxury catamaran. It was such a fun way to get out on the water and see a different side of the island. We shared the boat with other travelers, which was actually really fun and gave us a chance to meet people from all over the world.
The staff was personable and attentive, and depending on the weather, you can spend the day swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing in the sun and taking in the views. The weather was a little too cold for us to swim, but it was still warm enough to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful scenery. It was such a relaxing way to spend the day away from the busy streets of Mykonos Town.
DAY CLUBS
Mykonos has definitely mastered the art of beach club culture. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing lunch by the water, a day spent lounging on a sunbed, or a lively afternoon filled with music and drinks, there’s a beach club for every type of vibe. Each one has its own atmosphere, so you can choose between something more laid-back or somewhere that turns into a full-on party as the day goes on. With so many beautiful spots to choose from, spending at least one day at a Mykonos beach club is a must!
Scorpios Mykonos
Address: Paraga Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Located on Paraga Beach, Scorpios is more than just a beach club — it’s an entire experience. The bohemian atmosphere, music, food, and beautiful setting make it one of the most popular spots on the island. During the day, it has a more relaxed feel, while the energy picks up as the afternoon goes on. It’s a great spot to spend the day if you’re looking for that quintessential Mykonos beach club experience.
This was the one beach club I was able to visit during our trip and I honestly wish I could have experienced it at night as well! The design was gorgeous, the staff was so attentive, and they had some of the best drinks I’ve ever had. I still think about the drink I had called “Euphoria” every once in a while — it was that good!

Nammos Beach Club

Located on Psarou Beach, Nammos is one of the most well-known and upscale beach clubs in Mykonos. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but if you’re looking for a luxury beach day, this is the place. You can spend the day relaxing on the beach, enjoying Mediterranean food and cocktails, and taking in the lively atmosphere. Things really start to pick up in the afternoon!
Cavo Paradiso
Address: Paradise Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Cavo Paradiso is best known for its nightlife and famous DJs, but it’s also a popular spot to visit during the day. Located near Paradise Beach, the club sits right on the edge of a cliff with incredible views of the Aegean Sea. If you’re looking for somewhere that turns into a party as the day goes on, Cavo Paradiso is definitely worth checking out.
Alemagou
Address: Ftelia Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Located on Ftelia Beach, Alemagou has a more laid-back and bohemian feel compared to some of the island’s more upscale beach clubs. It’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing beach day while enjoying good food, music, and beautiful views. The rustic-chic setting gives it a really unique atmosphere that feels very Mykonos.
Principote Panormos
Address: Panormos Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Located on Panormos Beach, Principote is a stylish beach club with a more relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. The beautiful design, comfortable sunbeds, and Mediterranean-inspired menu make it a great option for a full beach day. It has the luxury feel you expect from a Mykonos beach club without feeling quite as over-the-top as some of the others.
Best Beaches to Visit in Mykonos
Mykonos is known for its beaches, and there's a huge range to choose from depending on what kind of beach day you're looking for. Some are known for their crystal-clear water and relaxing atmosphere, while others are home to beach clubs, music, and plenty of activity. Whether you want to spend the day lounging by the water or you’re looking for a more lively beach experience, there’s a spot for everyone.
Psarou Beach

Psarou is one of the most popular beaches in Mykonos and is known for its beautiful turquoise water and upscale atmosphere. It's home to Nammos (see the Day Clubs section above), so you can easily turn a beach day into a full beach club experience. The beach can get busy during the summer, but it’s definitely worth visiting if you want to see one of the most famous beaches on the island.
Ornos Beach
Address: Ornos Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Ornos Beach is a great option if you’re looking for somewhere that feels a little more relaxed and easygoing. The water is calm and clear, and there are plenty of restaurants and beach clubs nearby. It’s also a convenient beach to visit if you’re staying closer to Mykonos Town.
Paradise Beach
Address: Paradise Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Paradise Beach is one of the places to go if you want to experience the fun and lively side of Mykonos. During the day, you can enjoy the beach and grab a drink, while the atmosphere gets more energetic as the afternoon goes on. With beach clubs and nightlife right nearby, this is a great choice if you want your beach day to turn into a party.
Super Paradise Beach
Address: Super Paradise Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Super Paradise is another popular beach known for its clear blue water and lively atmosphere. It has a beautiful setting surrounded by hills and is home to several beach clubs. It’s a little more secluded than some of the other popular beaches, making it a fun spot to spend an afternoon.
Elia Beach
Address: Elia Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Elia is one of the longest sandy beaches on Mykonos and is a great option if you want a little more space to relax. The water is crystal clear, and there are restaurants and beach clubs nearby without the same level of crowds you’ll find at some of the island’s more famous beaches. If you’re looking for a more laid-back beach day, Elia is a great choice.
Agios Ioannis Beach
Address: Agios Ioannis Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Agios Ioannis is a smaller and quieter beach with beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. It’s especially known for its views of Delos in the distance and has a much more relaxed atmosphere than some of the island’s party beaches. This is a great spot to visit if you want to enjoy the scenery without spending the day surrounded by crowds.
Platis Gialos Beach
Address: Platis Gialos Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Platis Gialos is one of the most popular beaches on the island and is a great choice if you want a mix of beautiful scenery, restaurants, and easy access to other beaches. The beach is lined with restaurants and beach clubs, and boats also leave from here for some of the other beaches around Mykonos. It’s an easy place to spend a full day without having to go far for food or drinks.
Ftelia Beach
Address: Ftelia Beach, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Ftelia has a completely different feel from some of the island’s more glamorous beaches. It’s more rustic and laid-back, with a beautiful natural setting and fewer crowds. Alemagou is also located here, making it a great option if you want to combine a relaxing beach day with a beach club experience.
Where to Eat in Mykonos
There are so many amazing places to eat in Mykonos, from little traditional tavernas to beautiful restaurants overlooking the water. One of my favorite things about visiting Greece is that you really can’t go wrong with the food, and Mykonos was no exception. These are some of the restaurants we visited during our trip, along with a few others I would add to your list if you’re planning your own trip.
Kastro's
Address: Agion Anargyron 1, Little Venice, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Kastro's is located right in Little Venice and is such a beautiful spot for dinner. The location alone makes it worth visiting, with tables tucked into the charming streets just steps from the water. It has a romantic atmosphere and is a great place to stop for dinner while exploring Mykonos Town.
Pasta Fresca Barkia
Address: 15 Kouzi Georgouli, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
If you need a break from Greek food, Pasta Fresca Barkia is such a fun option in Mykonos Town. This little pasta spot serves fresh pasta in a casual setting and is perfect for a quick and delicious meal while wandering around town. Sometimes you just need a bowl of pasta after a day of exploring!
Avra Mykonos

Avra is a beautiful restaurant tucked away from the busier streets of Mykonos Town. The setting is gorgeous, with a cozy garden atmosphere that makes it feel like a little escape from the crowds. It's a great option for a more romantic dinner and has that perfect Mediterranean feel.
Kiki's Tavern
Address: Agios Sostis, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Kiki's Tavern is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem. Located near Agios Sostis Beach, this tiny traditional Greek taverna has no sign and no reservations, which makes getting a table part of the experience. The food is simple, fresh, and delicious, and the laid-back atmosphere is exactly what you want from a Greek island taverna. Be prepared to wait, but I think it's worth it!
Spilia Seaside Restaurant

If you're looking for a beautiful meal right on the water, Spilia is a great option. The restaurant is built into a natural cave overlooking the sea, giving it a really unique setting. It's a great choice for a long lunch or dinner when you want the meal to feel like an experience.
Interni
Address: Matogianni, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Interni is a great option if you're looking for something a little more upscale. The restaurant is tucked into a beautiful courtyard in the heart of Mykonos Town and has a lively, elegant atmosphere. It's definitely more of a splurge, but the setting makes it a fun choice for a special night out.
Bakalo
Address: Lakka, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Bakalo is a beautiful traditional Greek restaurant located in a charming old Mykonian home. The courtyard setting is cozy and romantic, and the menu focuses on traditional Greek flavors with a slightly more modern twist. If you want something that feels authentic but still special, this would be high on my list.
Drinks & Nightlife
Mykonos definitely knows how to do a night out! Whether you're looking for a sunset cocktail, a bar tucked into the streets of Little Venice, or somewhere to dance until late, there is no shortage of places to grab a drink. We visited quite a few different bars during our trip, and each one had its own vibe.
Negrita
Address: Mykonos Town, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Negrita is located right in Little Venice and is a fun spot for cocktails with a beautiful waterfront setting. It's a popular place, so I recommend making a reservation in advance if you know you want to visit. The atmosphere gets livelier as the night goes on, making it a great place to start your evening.
180° Sunset Bar
Address: Mykonos 846 00, Greece
If you're looking for one of the best sunset views in Mykonos, 180° Sunset Bar is definitely one to add to your list. The bar sits high above Mykonos Town and has incredible views over the island and Aegean Sea. Grab a cocktail, find a spot outside, and stay for sunset — you won't regret it!
Bao's Bar
Address: Lamprou Katsoni 1, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Bao's is a fun cocktail bar in Mykonos Town with a more intimate and stylish atmosphere. It's a great place to stop for a drink while exploring the town and is especially fun if you're looking for somewhere that feels a little more local and laid-back.
Scandinavian Bar
Address: Georgouli, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Scandinavian Bar is one of the more well-known nightlife spots in Mykonos. Located right in the heart of Mykonos Town, it's a fun place to go if you're looking for music, dancing, and a livelier night out. The party can go well into the early morning, so this is definitely one for the night owls!
Caprice
Address: Little Venice, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Caprice is another classic Mykonos nightlife spot located right in Little Venice. It's a great place to grab a cocktail while enjoying the views of the water, especially around sunset. As the evening goes on, the atmosphere becomes more energetic, making it an easy place to continue your night after dinner.
Astra
Address: Matogianni, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Astra is one of the classic nightlife spots in Mykonos Town and is known for its stylish atmosphere and lively crowd. It's a great option if you're looking for somewhere to have drinks and experience the more glamorous side of Mykonos nightlife.
Scarpa
Address: Little Venice, Mykonos 846 00, Greece
Located right along the water in Little Venice, Scarpa is a great spot for cocktails and a fun night out. The atmosphere starts out more relaxed and gets livelier as the night goes on. It's the perfect combination of beautiful views and classic Mykonos nightlife.
Final Thoughts on Mykonos
Mykonos was everything I imagined a Greek island getaway would be and more. From wandering the whitewashed streets of Mykonos Town and watching the sunset in Little Venice to relaxing at beautiful beaches, spending the day at a beach club, and sailing around the Aegean Sea on a catamaran, there was something special about every day. Three days gave us enough time to experience many of the highlights of Mykonos without feeling like we were constantly rushing from one place to another.
